#Poem – She Dances For Them

I wrote this witnessing Alexandra Vie dancing the Jaipongan, which is a communal dance but she was dancing it as a solo.

 It’s in the bones
 It’s in the blood
 As deep as heartbeat
 As old as loss
 As quick as pain
 Breathless like time
 Each step in rhythm
Each bend of the wrist in synchrony
 Their faces skywards
 The people chanting
 Chanting
 All the people ululating
 In a circle they danced
 For the crowd
 For the past
 For the living
 For the others
 For themselves
 In unison
 At once for the dead
 For their children’s children
 For the unborn in bellies
 Listening to their history
