Poem: Why We Gather

We gather not because you are gone
Not because I wish to feel your weight on my sofa,
Not because I have too much drink in,
Not because I have the nuts you like,
But gathered we are, waiting.

Who knows the why?
To feel your breathing
To hear your song
To make the room warm with your laugh
We gather here

But I hear you in the in between.
I see you as I close my eyes,
See your smile when I open my curtains,
Your embrace in a hot chocolate,
Your sadness in the shadow of my block.

We gather to hear the stories
The stories you have long forgotten to tell me
And the ones I long to hear again.
